Makerere University Mosque
History
Makerere University, one of the oldest and most prominent English universities in Africa, was founded in 1922 as a modest technical school. 14 day students started studying carpentry, building, and mechanics at the institution, which ultimately went by the name Uganda Technical College, in January of that year. In 1994, the university has decided to build a mosque for the muslim community of the students on campus.
Urban and Architectural
The mosque has a 600-person capacity and caters to the university's Muslim student body. The structure has a square plan, a double-height prayer room, and a women's gallery on the upper level.
Description
The plan a is simple square with a single dome centered at the north east side of the building along with a minaret built next to the mosque.
