Grand Mosque of Ngaoundéré

History

This mosque was constructed in 1983 by French architect Armand Salomon and financed by Alhaji Abbo, a wealthy merchant from Ngaoundéré

Urban and Architectural

The plan features a huge square courtyard to the east of a rectangular prayer hall that is perpendicular to the qibla and enclosed by an arcade. With auxiliary entrances on the north and south sides of the courtyard, the main entrance is on axis with and on the opposite side of the courtyard from the mihrab. The laamiio will be able to take a position at the head of the crowd once everyone else has arrived thanks to a small doorway in the north-east corner that is only for his usage.

Description

The contemporary grand mosque of Ngaoundéré is a substantial reinforced concrete building constructed in an international style that takes its cues from Ottoman Imperial architecture as seen through the North African heritage, as indicated by the huge central dome and plan.
