Mosque of Islamic Solidarity
History
With funding from the Saudi King Fahd bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud Foundation, the Hamar Construction Company built the Mosque of Islamic Solidarity in 1987. It is an iconic structure in Somali society and the major mosque in the nation's capital.
The masjid was shut down when the civil war broke out in the early 1990s. The Islamic Courts Union later reopened it in 2006 after starting to raise money from local businesses for the building's proposed improvements. The infrastructure of the mosque underwent formal renovations that were finished in 2015 by the Federal Government of Somalia.
Urban and Architectural
The white mosque's architecture is in the traditional Islamic style that is most associated with mosques in Saudi Arabia, but it also has a hint of East African design. On the right side of the main entrance to this holy sanctuary, there is only one 35-meter-tall (115-foot) minaret that is primarily white.
Description
The largest masjid in the Horn of Africa is the Mosque of Islamic Solidarity. Up to 10,000 worshipers may be accommodated there. The mosque also has a view of the Somali Sea.
