Sidi Mahrez Mosque
History
This mosque is situated in the city's Medina neighborhood.
In 1692, Mohamed Bey El Mouradi, the son of Mourad Bey II, erected it as a tribute to Sidi Mahrez, Tunisia's patron saint. In a recess of the mosque, there is also Sidi Mahrez's grave.
Urban and Architectural
With a central dome and cupolas dominating the four corners of the prayer hall square, it is highly influenced by Ottoman architecture. Polychrome tiles were brought from Iznik (Turkey) to cover a significant portion of the wall facing Mecca and the magnificent pillars that support the central dome .
In the 1960s, the mosque's interior underwent renovation .
