History

The mosque's initial name, the Old Kampala National Mosque, was given to it when building on it started in 1972. Construction was put on hold in 1976 and then picked again up in 2001. 

The Uganda Muslim Supreme Council's headquarters were situated in the finished mosque, which was formally inaugurated as the Gaddafi National Mosque in June 2007.

After Colonel Gaddafi's death in 2013, it was renamed "Uganda National Mosque" because the new Libyan government "was reluctant to reconstruct the mosque under the old name." 

There are 304 steps leading up to the minaret of the mosque.
