The Islamic Cultural Center and Mosque Omar
History
In 1976, 18 Muslim countries with diplomatic representation in Spain signed an agreement to erect a mosque in Madrid. However, the project was postponed for 11 years, until King Fahd of Saudi Arabia provided the necessary financing (2,000 million pesetas) to carry out the construction. After five years of work, on September 21, 1992, the Saudi monarch and Juan Carlos I of Spain inaugurated the building 1.
Description
The Islamic Cultural Center and Mosque Omar in Madrid (Spain) is a building located at 4 Calle de Salvador de Madariaga, in the Barrio de San Pascual (District of Ciudad Lineal). Its west façade faces the M-30 road, which has made the construction also popularly known as the M-30 Mosque.
Currently it constitutes the first Major Mosque (masjid) of the capital, followed by the Islamic Community of Madrid, Abu-Bakr Mosque or Central Mosque of Madrid.
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia provided the administrative and spiritual guidance of the ITC until the beginning of 2001, when it came to supervise its Concerted College. Currently, spiritual direction is in the hands of Sheikh Moneir Mahmud, a Sunni of Egyptian nationality, who also acts as the main imam. Moroccan, Syrian and Spanish personnel work in the administration, with a proportion of approximately 40% women (according to personal sources of the Mosque staff).
