Tevhid mosque

History

Tevhid or Tevhit is the Turkish name for the Arabic term tawhid (توحيد), which denotes the unity of God . The name also indicates the foundation's aim for unity and unification in society, while retaining its own identity and with respect and understanding of mutual norms and values. The foundation is committed to the integration of Maastricht Turks and other ethnic groups in society. It does this by developing initiatives that make a positive contribution to the emancipation and self-awareness of the target groups, in order to eliminate the disadvantaged situation.

The Tevhid foundation was founded in 1991 by a group of Turkish volunteers in Maastricht.

On December 14, 2006, there was an arson attempt in the building. The fire caused little damage and the perpetrators were never caught.  Exactly eleven years later, on December 14, 2017, stabbing incidents with multiple victims took place at two locations in Maastricht-West , two of which died. The perpetrator then entered a room in the Tevhid mosque, bloodied and armed with a knife, where he could be arrested by the police. There were no casualties in the mosque. Because it was initially assumed a terrorist attack, the police raised a great alarm.  The perpetrator, a 37-year-old man from Maastricht with a Syrian background, was reported by the Pieter Baan Centerdeclared completely insane and was sentenced by the court in March 2019 to 24 years in prison and TBS
