Setia Raja Mosque
History
Setia Raja Mosque was built in 1875. In 1892, a new mosque was built, replacing the damaged original mosque. In 1935, due to the soil corrosion, a wooden mosque was built by the local community at Kampung Penakub Hilir in Mukah. As the local population grew and expanded, the mosque was unable to hold large congregations. In 1998, the current mosque was unveiled as part of the town's revitalization project to cater for a larger congregation.
Urban and Architectural
The mosque’s features a peculiar vernacular architectural
element that identities with the Melanau ethnic community and Mukah town
itself. The conical dome root is a symbol of the famous traditional Melanau
headgear, the terendak, It was used by the women .as a head cover when they
went out under the scorching sun. The terendak headgear is still in use by
certain women folk and madeby famous local craftsman or women folk in various
sizes and styles.
The mosque's building spans over the ground floor in a simple
square layout. A grand terendak dome tops the root level, with tour smaller
domes on each corner. A distant, detached minaret is located adjacent to the
bulling, in the middle of a front roundabout, furnished with Mughal-styled
pointed domes.
The high ceiling of the mosque's prayer hall, created in a
double volume space, allows for greater natural ventilation and lighting. This
is assisted by the upper clerestory windows, and high walled windows found
across the prayer hall. The interior of the terendak dome is finished with a
vibrant roof plate made of aluminum. It is supported by an elevated ring beam,
linked by a series of pointed arches.
The general interior space of the main prayer hall is
decorated using a simple off-white plaster finish, with an intricate carving
and pattern that are used on to its columns, wall and ceiling. Several
chandeliers hang from the ceiling and a grand large chandelier hangs in the
middle. A central pointed arch indicates the mihrab niche finished with glass
glazed tiles, supplemented by a group of blind arches on the gibla wall. A
stand-alone mimbar platform is beautifully carved with the belian timber
material.
