As Syakirin Mosque
History
The mosque was built by the KLCC Project in 1997 and completed in 1998. The mosque was built on a site of 100 acres. Initially, the mosque was registered with the Federal Territory Islamic Religious Department (JAWI) as a surau on 12 July 1999 for the use of Petronas staff before being upgraded to a mosque administered by the Federal Territory Islamic Religious Council (MAIWP). The construction cost reached RM 24 million and can accommodate 6,500 pilgrims at a time.
This two -storey mosque covers an area of 21 hectares. This mosque is considered as a "Gem in the Garden" due to its strategic position and facing the KLCC Park . The mosque also provides a hall that can accommodate up to 1,000 people equipped with an audio system, meeting room and mortuary.
In early 2009, renovation work on the mosque at a cost of RM 25 million was started. The renovation, which is expected to be completed in November 2009, is to increase the mosque's capacity to 11,000 worshipers following the increase in the number of Friday prayers .
Urban and Architectural
The double-tiered dome bears a resemblance to the main dome
of An-Nur Mosque at Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UP). where this very dome
inspired the use of the shape of the dome. It sits on a ring beam that spans
across the main prayer hall, the square
layout marks an angular space in front where the mihrab niche is located. An upper
female prayer gallery overlooks the main prayer hall.
Made of steel structure, the steel-clad dome is equipped with
a skylight roof, thus providing natural light to pass through to the interior
spaces. At the upper tier of the dome, the inside space has been crafted with
plaster finish to become muqarnas vault and furnished with a space to accommodate
building services.
On the front gibla wall, the intricate plasterwork carvings have
been added to match the marble finish wall with blind arches and stained glass
windows. These carvings have emulated the grand mihrab niche with the intricate
double-tiered mulgaras vault used to accentuate the importance of the feature. The
vast mihrab niche paves an entrance step leading to the built-in mimbar located
to the right side: an elevated pulpit platform of the mimbar attached to a
pointed arch.
