History


In 14 February 1974 Shah Alam was declared as the new capital for Selangor state. 1 October 1983 Commencement of construction work. 15 August 1987 Construction completed. 11 March 1988 Launching ceremony of Blue Mosque was held by His Royal Highness Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah. August 1993 The mosque was listed in the Guinness Records as having the tallest minaret in the world before being surpassed by the Hassan II Mosque.

Urban and Architectural


The main prayer hall is located on the first floor, with the female prayer gallery elevated above it. To ensure functional ventilation Inside the hall, cooled air is piped in through 24-pole ducts; "helicopter stand fans were also installed in the main prayer hall to enable better air circulation. At the ring of the dome. 24-exhaust tans extract the rising warm air.

The outdoor prayer area is encircled by a courtyard equipped with a hidden fountain system, which is used as an overspill area for praying when the water fountain is turned off. The high ceiling and open veranda of the external prayer areas also help to ventilate the main prayer hall, along with the high latticed doors which are opened and situated around the main praying hall.

The interior of the prayer hall is finely designed with doorways, windows and walls featuring aluminum grilles with intricate geometric arabesque patterns. The windows are adorned with blue-colored stained glass. which filters the light entering the interior space, thus creating a serene ambience. The flooring is made of fine Belgian worsted wool carpet. The rest of the mosque is finished with locally-made Langkawi white marble, with the use of granite stones to finish the walls,

The prayer hall is accented by hanging chandeliers, supplemented by pinball lights that give the impression of the starlit sky. On the qibla well, the design of the mimbar. carved in Kelantanese wood, is akin to the current Prophet's mimbar design, The mihrab is modern, with layers of arches finished in simple white marble. The niche is decorated with a wooden panel featuring a geometrical design.

Description


The Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Mosque is the state mosque of Selangor, Malaysia. It is located in Shah Alam. It is the country's largest mosque and also the second largest mosque in Southeast Asia by capacity. Its most distinguishing feature is its large blue and silver dome. The mosque has four minarets, one erected at each of the corners.
