Sultan Idris Shah II Mosque
History
The Sultan Idris Shah II Mosque was inaugurated on 15 September 1978 by Sultan Idris Iskandar Shah II (1963-1984), the 54th Sultan, in conjunction with the celebration of his 54th birthday. It is located on a plot of land of about 2.6 hectares in the heart of Ipoh. Construction work on the mosque began on 16 May 1966, and the foundation stone was laid on 27 October 1967 by (the late) Tun Haji Abdul Razak , then Deputy Prime Minister. The mosque was completed on August 26, 1968.
Initially, this mosque was named as 'State Mosque (Perak)' and was named 'Sultan Idris Shah II Mosque' in conjunction with the name of Sultan Idris Iskandar Shah II who had returned to Rahmatullah in 1984.
The idea of building this mosque came from (Allahyarham) Orang Kaya-Kaya Panglima Bukit Gantang Seri Amar Diraja Abdul Wahab in 1951. He who was then the Menteri Besar was aware that the existing mosques in lpoh were not enough to accommodate all the congregations. who perform ibadah at one time such as the great day of Islam and the ibadah of Friday prayers.
Urban and Architectural
The double-storeyed structure is visibly dominated by a
series of 66 oval-pointed dome, with a central pointed dome of a similar shape.
Each dome sits on an exposed cross drum beam, with a tapered needle pinnacle.
The domes ore distributed over the upper tier, where the clerestory windows are
located, The mosque now houses the main prayer hall, female prayer section, conference
room, office ream, library, storeroom, with ablution and toilet facilities.
On First impression, he overall facade design resembles the
famous facade design of the Parliament House building in Kuala Lumpur. The
building envelope is clad with a modernist design in a curve and pointed form,
influenced by the tropical organic form infused together with an Islamic
arabesque pattern. Made of concrete mould, the pattern is repeated and covers
the whole external building facade. On the east side, a square base minaret is
designed and built with on elevated balcony with a dome at its top.
