Belo Horizonte Mosque

Information

Belo Horizonte, capital of Minas Gerais, is home to the largest mosque in the state, where a large Islamic community is formed by Brazilians, Lebanese, Moroccans, Egyptians, Syrians, more diverse Africans, Indians, Pakistanis, and even some Europeans. The Mosque of Belo Horizonte was founded in 1991 as a result of a demand from the community that until then used to meet in local city halls. There is no proper founder, because it is said that the whole community came together to build and found the mosque, which was initially called the Muhammad Messenger of God Mosque. Currently, the mosque is run by Sheik Mokkar Elkhan, who in addition to his role as Sheik, has also taken on the role of President and Secretary of the Mosque.

The Belo Horizonte mosque is located in the capital of the state of Minas Gerais in Brazil. The building also houses the Islamic Centre of Minas Gerais. It is located in a residential neighbourhood surrounded by green areas and mountains. Its architecture presents authentic forms and straight lines, the dome and the only minaret sit on a concrete box, accentuating the symbolism of these elements. Inside the mosque there is little ornamentation but the austerity is broken by the use of tropical gardens in its interiors.
