This is a grand mosque which was established in the year 2001 and is perfectly located in northwestern Amsterdam along the vast pathways. Mevlana mosque majorly serves Turkish-Dutch Muslims and was named after Rumi. The design is by the Schiedam architect Bert Toorman. He was commissioned by the Turkish community to design a mosque that would be recognizable to the faithful as a traditional Ottoman mosque but would also be appreciated as a monument by neutral non-Muslim viewers.

The Mevlana mosque’s floors are primarily made of hollo-core slabs, a component that cannot be seen in traditional ottoman mosques. Since hollow-core slabs emerged after the reinforced concrete slabs in the early twentieth century, as mentioned in the article of Gasparini.

The Rottoman Mevlana Mosque is a remarkable building compared to its surrounding context. This religious structure is situated in an open area next to the river De Rotterdamse Schie.

The Entrance area between the two high minarets ( 42 meter hight), people can move up two flights of stairs in the most compact way to ensure as much prayer space as possible. It consitis of conference room, community room, computer classroom, amenity room. The women’s area is situated behind a screen or upstairs on a second-floor balcony.

The minaret and the wonderful dome featured by this mosque has made it earn the title of the most beautiful mosque in Rotterdam in the year 2006. The way up through the minaret goes along a very narrow steel staircase. And the balconies appear to be very narrow. The estimate a depth of barely thirty centimeters. Both minarets are 42 meters high; the upper balcony is probably at 35 metres. That’s not extremely high, but because there are no other tall buildings in the area, the view over Rotterdam is nevertheless spectacular.
