_Gaddafi National Mosque (Uganda National Mosque)

Information

Colonel Muammar Gaddafi of Libya commissioned the mosque as a gift to Uganda, and for the benefit of the Muslim population. It was renamed Uganda National Mosque in 2013 following the death of Colonel Gaddafi as the new Libyan administration was “reluctant to rehabilitate the mosque under the old name.

The mosque is linked to Uganda Muslim supreme council. it is located at Kampala Hill in the Old Kampala area of Kampala, Uganda. The Uganda National Mosque sits on over 10 acres of land thus emerging as the second largest mosque in Africa, accommodating as much as 200,000 worshipers, seating up to 15,000 worshipers in the main mosque while holding another 1,100 in the gallery and 3,500 in the terrace.

The architecture of the mosque features twelve arches each with a 4.9-meter hight, five domes and one minaret with a height of  50.5 meters. The mosque is built from reinforced concrete.
