_Tinmel Mosque (Great Mosque of Tinmel)

Information

The Tinmel or Tinmal Mosque, also known as the Great Mosque of Tinmel, is a 12th-century structure located in the village of Tinmel in Morocco’s High Atlas Mountains. Although no longer used for worship, it stands as a preserved historical monument and a remarkable example of Almohad architecture, built on the burial site of Ibn Tumart, founder of the Almohad movement. The mosque was added to Morocco’s UNESCO Tentative List in 1995 but suffered significant damage during the 2023 Marrakesh–Safi earthquake.

Measuring 48 x 43.6 meters, the mosque features a central courtyard (23.65 x 16.7 meters) flanked by side galleries that extend from the prayer hall’s nine naves. A T-shaped floor plan, typical of North African mosques since the Aghlabid era, defines the layout. The wider transverse and axial naves emphasize the qibla wall, housing the mihrab, the focal point of the mosque’s decor. The mihrab is simple yet striking, marked by a slightly broken horseshoe arch, a pointed arch above it, and a surrounding frame that enhances its visual presence.

The mosque was constructed primarily with brick and a mortared mixture of earth, pebbles, and lime. The prayer hall features brick pillars enclosed by semi-engaged columns—an architectural style rooted in Abbasid and later Fatimid and Tulunid traditions. The three muqarnas domes near the qibla wall rest on squinches and are among the earliest examples of Almohad vegetal stucco decoration, sharing stylistic elements with the Kutubiyya Mosque in Marrakech and La Giralda in Seville.

While epigraphic ornamentation is minimal—limited to a kufic inscription band—the mosque’s geometric and floral stucco motifs (rosettes, interlaces, stars) offer a refined and meditative atmosphere, supporting the faithful’s spiritual focus.
