In 1976, the new Fatih Mosque Complex (Coburg Islamic Centre) was built at 31 Nicholson Street, Coburg. The centre seeks to truly reflect the needs of the local Muslim constituency in this century. Currently, a new mosque is under construction at the same site to accommodate the increased numbers of Muslins using the mosque.
The original mosque used to have a fountain within a covered courtyard ,while in the new plans they were removed because of expanding the mosque with the additional land acquisition to accommodate a larger congregation. The only stark features that distinguish the building from its neighbours as a religious or Islamic facility are the existence of a minaret and a small dome that adorns the building, making the building insignificant and unparalleled to its supposedly symbolic presence. however, there was a new to rebuild a new mosque as there were some key issues in the original mosque which include structural problems with the dome, incorrect Qibla direction, worn down general appearance, and impractical functioning of general spaces, in particular the sister’s prayer area.
The new Coburg Islamic Centre architecture, by award winning Elevli plus and aydn.co Interior Design Studio, is
modern and contemporary. At the same time it is inspired by traditions of true Islam, emphasising peace, simplicity,
geometry, light and nature.
The new Coburg Mosque with a capacity of 600 worshippers is not specifically a place of worship but also serves as an educational hub and provides a space for other Islamic activities needed by the Muslim community. There will be a large light filled covered courtyard that will be a gathering space for all of our community as well as for use during the Jumah prayers and Eid festivities.
