_Delgosha Mosque (Bandar Abbas Mosque)

Information

Delgosha Mosque, also known as Bandar Abbas Mosque, is one of the oldest mosques in the city of Bandar Abbas. The prayer hall of this mosque dates from 1738 and had been subsumed by subsequent reconstruction that did not follow preservation principles. The mosque has been renovated and reconstructed several times. The reconstruction of the mosque in the modern era began in 2003 and was completed in 2008.

The preservation and revitalization went through three stages: Separating and clearing unnecessary added extensions,  Restoring and strengthening the old Prayer Hall and finally the Constructing the new building. The first move was to strip away the newer interventions and strengthen the original hall with steel supports. This was then contained at the heart of a new mosque building with a reinforced concrete structure. A tall minaret was added as an urban marker visible from the sea. A women’s prayer hall was added at first floor level and several new access routes established through the surrounding urban fabric, including a dedicated women’s entrance. Up to 430 worshippers now gather for the daily prayers in the old hall.

The mosque is located on Taleghani Boulevard (coastal) in Bandar Abbas, facing the sea, has two floors, a minaret, a courtyard, and 12 columns that remain from the original design of the mosque.

The mosque’s nave (iwan) is built on two floors. The nave has about 20 large doors that open to the northern, eastern, and southern porches of the mosque. The mihrab of the mosque is decorated with tile work. The old mosque building consisted of a pillared nave with 12 columns in the middle and pillared porches on the three western, southern and eastern facades. The pillared section in the middle of the new nave remains. This section of the nave has 12 columns with cylindrical stems and cubic bases, the columns being connected to each other at the top by truss arches, providing the basis for the erection of a girder-covered platform. The stems and bases of the columns were covered with stone façade pieces in recent renovations. The heads of the columns and their upper parts have plaster decorations.

The architectural design of this mosque was done by Shahabuddin Arfaei and his colleagues Masoud Mansouri, Nasser Mojavar,
