_Memorial Mosque

Information

The designer of the mosque project was the Moscow architect Ilyas Tazhiev, combining different styles in the external appearance of the building – Caucasian, Tatar and Uzbek Muslim schools. The mosque has a Muslim community and a madrasah. The central dome is made in the form of a ribbed cone, which is crowned with a gilded sphere with a crescent fixed on it. The vaults of the prayer hall are supported by eight pillars, decorated with carvings on white stone. Under the dome are galleries for women. In the center of the prayer hall is a crescent-shaped chandelier with a diameter of four meters. The minaret, 60 meters high, is located on the southeast side of the building. At a height of 50 meters there is a circular platform from which the muezzin calls the faithful to prayer. Under the prayer hall there are utility and auxiliary premises, classrooms and offices of imams. In 2006, new additions were made to expand the premises of the mosque.

The monumental, but seemingly light, openwork building of the Memorial Mosque on Poklonnaya Gora is built of reinforced concrete structures and lined with red decorative brick with white stone trim. The central dome is a ribbed cone made of reddish metal, apparently made of forged copper. On the spire of the dome there is a gilded ball, on which the symbol of Islam is fixed – a gilded crescent. The central dome is surrounded by six semi-domes with oblong, loophole-like narrow windows. They also have gold-plated balls. In the drum of the central dome, 12 narrow windows were made for lighting.

A six-sided minaret, 5 m in diameter and 60 m high, was erected on the southeastern side of the mosque. It is also lined with red decorative brick. At a height of 50 m, on the minaret, there is a fenced circular platform for the muezzin, who calls the faithful to prayer. To amplify the voice of the muezzin, powerful speakers are installed on the minaret. The forged copper roof of the minaret is made in the form of a hexagonal pyramid crowned with a ball, on which the Islamic crescent shines with gilding.

A large crystal chandelier, made in the shape of a crescent, is suspended from the ceiling of the prayer hall.

The vaults of the prayer room are supported by eight pillars – columns. There are two tiers of galleries for women on the inner walls of the mosque under the dome. Directly from the entrance to the hall is a mihrab indicating the direction to Mecca. On the right side of the mihrab is a minbar – a pulpit from which sermons are read. The entire prayer hall of the mosque, columns, vaults, galleries, balconies are richly decorated with white applied carvings and ornaments. The hall is equipped with radio equipment and loudspeakers. The marble floor is covered with carpets.
